APOLITICAL MAP

Maps are a critical instrument for the understanding of geopolitical relationships. From shaping the cultural and historical narratives to perpetuating power dynamics, maps underscore the complex interplay between cartography and global affairs. ‘Apolitical map’ is an attempt to create a map free from distortions and, at the same time, an exploration of failure in times of political uncertainty.

The project aims to create a portion of a 1:1 scaled map in order to reduce abstractions to the minimum. For this process, a printing plate with detailed notes on the relief and elevation contours of a street located along the border within Mexico City was created. Following this action, a segment of the plate underwent a controlled process of blind embossing, resulting in a suggestive symbol resembling various attributes commonly seen on modern maps.

The final print is accompanied by a video and the first printing plate that account for the research processes.
